Maundy Thursday – The primary event of this day is the Lord’s (or Last) Supper. As Jesus was in Jerusalem for the celebration of Passover, He and His disciples had gathered to observe the Passover Seder. They ate, sang hymns, and then Jesus washed their feet. This is also the date and the place where Jesus instituted the rite of Communion. The name ‘maundy’ derives from the Latin for ‘command’: in the Gospel of John, when asked why He was washing their feet, Jesus responded with: “A new commandment I give unto you: That you love one another, as I have loved you, that you also love one another.” Our church’s Maundy Thursday service is solemn, concluding with stripping the altar. Like many churches, a part of the service includes the washing of hands which echoes Jesus’ washing of the disciples’ feet.
