The Intentional Faith Development and Inclusivity Committees, along with the Strangers as Neighbors study group, invites you to join us for our first One Book, One Church read and discuss event. The IFD committee has selected two books, Just Like Us, by Helen Thorpe and My (Underground) American Dream, by Julissa Arce to begin reading in September.
We will plan to begin our discussions Wednesday, September 16 at 2:00 pm. We also are interested in holding a second Zoom meeting on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 pm for members and friends who work during the day. Bruce Fest will lead our afternoon discussions, and Pastor Stephanie will lead the evening discussions.
We will begin with Just Like Us, about four girls from Mexico who attend school in Denver. Two girls have legal documentation and two do not; this affects their future educational goals and lives. Julissa Arce, a vice president at Goldman Sachs on Wall Street, also is an undocumented immigrant who shares her life experiences with us.
Mountain View wants to involve our upper elementary, middle-, and high-school students in our reading program. Arce has written another book, Someone Like Me, which shares her story with younger readers. Arce has developed reading guides that can help parents discuss this book with their children. To register for either of the Zoom meetings, please contact the Church Office at: office@mtview.org. Thank you and we look forward to sharing our thoughts and perspectives in September.
