Reading the Bible the Wesley Way
By Phil Youngren
Tuesdays, 10:00 am, February 23 – March 23
Beginning Tuesday, February 23 at 10:00 am I will be offering a study of how to read the Bible in the manner that our founder of Methodism, John Wesley, suggests. This study will last four weeks. We will begin looking at the life of John Wesley, then take a look at the Bible starting with a quick history, followed by a look at what the Bible is and what it tells us. With this background we will embark on Wesley’s method of Bible study which involves seven steps that will help us to be able better understand what God’s will is for us.
There are a few requirements for those who are interested in this endeavor. First and foremost is that you must set aside each and every day thirty minutes of absolutely uninterrupted silence. Next you must have a study Bible with copious footnotes, which will help to better understand the Scriptures. I would suggest the NIV study Bible by Zondervan Publishing. This Bible is absolutely loaded with footnotes, but also many maps, drawings, charts, essays etc. that enhances the Bible itself. This Bible is readily available at most bookstores with a cost of $30.00- $40.00. I have had mine for over thirty years and it is still going strong after a lot of abuse. Look at this Bible as an investment. It will repay you in more ways than you can possibly imagine.
