May is a month full of special celebrations: Mother’s Day, graduation, end of school awards, Memorial Day and others! One of my memories of May, though, is final exams. With exams in high school, college, law school, and seminary, I have taken a lot of final exams! I know some of you have taken even more. Some of you have had to sit for licensure exams, journey cards, and professional certificates. All of these can be a source of stress.
I have been thinking about this in conjunction with our new sermon series. I will be preaching on the I Am sayings of Jesus. The exam isn’t how many of those you understand, we will get to that, but the exam has one question: Who is Jesus to you? Can you pass? There isn’t a right answer, but do you have an answer? Have you thought about it lately?
Christology is defined as the part of theology that is concerned with the nature and work of Jesus, including such matters as the Incarnation, the Resurrection, and his human and divine natures and their relationship (Britanica). Which of these attributes are most important to you? We will delve into that in the weeks ahead. I look forward to this time of discovery.
We will look at several of the I Am statements to give us context to answer the question for ourselves. If you would like to prepare, I encourage you to read these passages for yourself.
